Hey guys, if you haven't heard yet, I've been picked as one of the five house DJs to watch in 2010. It's a great honor to be included with such talented and dedicated DJs who truly inspire the dancefloors to which they play.

In other news, since I don't really update this blog too much anymore, I invite you to check out Hello World with DZA, my weekly radio show where I showcase some of the best and brightest in Philadelphia's house music community.

I'm also playing at Konkrete Jungle Philadelphia's Winter Wonderland party this Friday night from 11pm - 12am in the upstairs room at Samba Nightclub. The venue, which also hosts the seminal 4AM party with DJs Dirty & Jayo, is located at 7th & Girard Streets in Philadelphia.

Remember when DJs constantly put out mixtapes of their work to both promote themselves AND the music that they play? I do and in honor of that, I will be making thirty mixes from April 1st to April 30th. The rules are as follows:

- 10 tracks minimum
- No repeat tracks, different remixes are ok

The mixes will be widely available in both 192k & 320k MP3 format.

Expect a little bit of something different everyday. One day might be deep house, another might be tech house, and yet another might possibly not even be a house mix!

DZA's got a new toy!

So, I pretty much quit playing on turntables a while back because I got tired of pitch chasing mixes on janky & broken turntables. I had been using my laptop keyboard since August, but I was recently sold on picking up a Korg NanoKontrol when I saw Jesse Merlin rocking it at High Stakes a few weeks ago. For $60, this little controller does everything that I need within Traktor, from adjusting pitch to going crazy on the effects.

Setup was a breeze. I put together a complete scene of parameters, from scratch, in ten minutes.

My only gripe with the unit is that the lights don't stay on when in toggle mode, so I have to refer back to my laptop monitor before pressing buttons, but I'm sure there's some kind of patch out there that fixes this that I haven't found.

I'll post up my midi settings here for you guys later :)

I love Jamie Morris. There, I said it. Everytime I've gone to hear him play in the last couple of years, it's been nothing but awesome. What he does is like a hybrid of DJing and Live PA that you really never get to hear done well. To say that I'm excited for this is an understatment. On top of that, it's Agent Kelly's birthday. So, we're going balls to the walls. I took off of work on the 27th. I recommend that you do as well.

If talent converted into record sales, David Moufang would be a very rich man. His records with partner Jonas Grossmann as Deep Space Network and his own solo releases as Move D are among the furthest outreaches of techno's push towards the stars. Moufang grew up in Heidelberg listening to his parents' collection of early Pink Floyd and Kraftwerk records but the most overwhelming influence on his childhood was outer space, the result of a trip to the cinema with his father to see 2001: A Space Odyssey. "I was space crazy as a child," Moufang told journalist Tony Marcus in 1995, "when the other kids were riding around in their little cars I'd be building my own spacecraft. I'd put in a small engine, put rubber on the wheels so it made some noise and stand there with a walkie-talkie and my headphones on. It was very techno..."
Moufang's grandmothers were both classical concert pianists. He can still remember favourite childhood moments, sitting under the piano as they played, surrounded and lost in sound. By the age of 12, he taken up drums (he eventually went on to study classical percussion) and took up the guitar a few years later, this time taking lessons from two separate jazz guitar teachers. He played guitar in a band called Rivers & Trains well into the '90s. Occasionally he even plied his trade as a DJ, spinning electro, funk and jazz. It wasn't until 1989 that he discovered techno when a friend of his, D-Man, invited him to a club he was running in the industrial suburb of Mannheim. When Moufang walked into the Milk! Club that night - like so many others before and after him - he discovered a scene that changed his life. Discovering Detroit, 808 State, Nexus 21 and the first stirrings of ambient techno, Moufang became a committed clubber. Through D-Man, he met Redagain P who converted Moufang's nickname "Mufti" into the more kinetic Move D.

Moufang's first records were made with Grossmann as Deep Space Network. Their first two albums, EARTH TO INFINITY (1992) and BIG ROOMS (1993) suggested a significant, unpredictable and innovative talent which was confirmed by the release of HOMEWORKS (1993), a Source Records compilation that included solo tracks such as "Pulsar" and "I've Been On Drugs" alongside collaborations with D-Man. Ranging from subtle, Detroit-inflected grooves to wired electronic jazz, Moufang's music seemed to operate on ambience, slow motion and subdued rhythm, a sound that was rooted, as Tony Marcus later pointed out, "in the jazzy, laid-back but still hip-tugging tradition of Larry Heard, Carl Craig's "Microlovr" or "The Wonders Of Wishing" and New York's Burrell Brothers... listening to [Moufang's records] is like a sweet and lazy adventure into sound, a space where time and stress are suspended."

REAGENZ (1994), a collaboration with SpaceTime Continuum's Jonah Sharp, was an astonishing fusion of beautiful, experimental electronics that reached out to a point that even Detroit's most visionary producers hadn't yet achieved. Recorded between Heidelberg and San Francisco, it sounded like pianist Bill Evans might have if he'd grown up surrounded by Star Trek instead of modal jazz.
Moufang's debut album, KUNSTSTOFF (1995), was equally remarkable. Tracks such as "Soap Bubbles" and "In/Out" oscillated between soft, dreamlike textures and the spiked electronics that Detroit was beginning to explore. The glittering production surfaces were a legacy of Moufang's days as a student at the School of Audio Engineering, but the music they encompassed was equally compelling. It was an album full of contrasts - between the jagged drugfloor grooves of, say, "Nimm 2" and the gentle, synthetic lullaby of "Beyond The Machine" or between the pristine sounds Moufang conjured with and the haloes of analogue noise which surrounded others. Amazingly pretty and wildly innovative, KUNSTSTOFF remains one of the most accomplished techno albums to emerge from Europe so far.

The collaborative ventures that followed - including EXPLORING THE PSYCHEDELIC LANDSCAPE (1996) and A DAY IN THE LIVE (1997) with Pete Namlook - preceded an experimental single for Sheffield's Warp label. Moufang had been a big fan of the label's "bleep techno" output in the early '90s and "Cymbelin" was, in some ways, a homage to that sound, twisting beats and synths into a bass heavy groove. But the producer's ability to soften almost any structure with aching prettiness transformed the record into a unique fusion.

Another unique fusion was suggested by the release of CONJOINT (1997). A collaboration between Moufang, jazz veteran Karl Berger, Jamie Hodge (of Born Under A Rhyming Planet) and Gunter "Ruit" Kraus, it was Moufang's most overtly jazzed outing so far, but provided spectacular evidence of his growing abilities as a producer and composer. Currently working on a number of new projects - including a new Deep Space Network album and a second Conjoint album - Moufang continues to explore the boundaries of electronic music.

James Amato’s business-savvy approach to the music industry has kept him balancing roles of promoter, record label owner, DJ and producer for more than a decade. From hosting his first one-off event in 1999 to securing his position as Director of Music and Bookings at Chicago’s historically influential SmartBar since 2006, James has become one of the most widely recognized names on the national & electronic music scene. Most recently, James has established his industry presence further, launching his widely successful fidget/electo/tech house label, Potty Mouth Music, which has earned him notoriety worldwide.

James launched his music career in his native city of Milwaukee, Wis., where he climbed through the promotional ranks of the local and Midwest rave scene in the 1990s. After working at pioneering electronic music venues—including Revolutions Records and Bassment with promoter and mentor Steven Kaye—he landed the position of Saturday Night Music Director and resident DJ at Milwaukee’s Pure nightclub. At the time, Pure stood as the city’s premiere underground music venue, boasting a six-figure sound system and sprawling capacity.

In 2004, James invested back into the industry by becoming co-owner and director of music and bookings at Milwaukee’s Mantra Lounge. Here he launched Kamasutra, a legendary Friday event that ran for three successful years. Kamasutra would go on to host an unprecedented line-up of electronic music talent the city had never seen before, or has ever seen since. As the night’s promoter, James booked a versatile roster of underground artist that defied genre boarders. The consistent success of Kamasutra put the city’s club scene on the national radar, as it garnered press attention from publications including URB and earned James a front-page cover story in Nightclub/Bar Magazine. His success also earned him runner-up for the “Best Promoter” in the U.S. by URB magazine, along with several pictorial Kamasutra spreads throughout 2005. Locally, James earned several press accolades, including “Best Club DJ” in Milwaukee’s 2005 Shepherd Express readers’ poll.

In September 2006, James relocated to Chicago to become the new Director of Music and Bookings at Chicago’s SmartBar, a historic venue with a 25-year tradition of showcasing electronic talent. Under the guidance of owner Joe Shanahan James continues broaden his scope as a promoter and bookings director, debuting innovative artists to Chicago, including Switch, Alan Braxe, Digitalism, Para One, Boys Noize, Erol Alkan and Claude Vonstroke.

In 2008, Club Systems International recognized his efforts to diversify and promote Chicago’s electronic music scene by selecting him as one of its “Next 10 Exciting Up-and-Comers” as part of its annual VIP Edition—“Nightlife’s 30 Most Influential People.” Additionally, James has received critical Chicago fanfare in 2007, when he was named part of NewCity magazine’s “45—45 Most Influential People That Rock Chicago!”

James’ promotional rise on the underground electronic scene led to his creation of two widely success digital/vinyl labels, including his 2007 venture, Potty Mouth Music, which showcases a diverse roster of fidget and tech house producers. With artists including: Santiago & Bushido, Crookers, HiJack, DJ Fame, The Bulgarian, and HeavyFeet, Potty Mouth Music has established itself as an innovative label embracing the newer dirty-quirky union of electro, house and techno. The label earned further notoriety in 2008, when label members Santiago & Bushido claimed the number-one downloaded track spot for their Potty Mouth single, “Head Trick,” claiming the spot for three consecutive weeks on beatport.com. The digital download site is the second most-trafficked music internet site in the world.

James continues to push the industry envelope in balancing his career as a Chicago-based promoter and label-owner. He now DJs exclusively at his resident home of SmartBar, playing only six shows a year in Chicago. His dedication in the studio and in the club continues to the industry standard of the international electronic music scene.

Now into his second decade as a true innovator in the electronic music scene, Charles Webster is one of the few real mould-breakers in an increasingly stale & predictable dance music world (though whether a man whose favourite artist is Rickie Lee Jones, and whose records ooze such soul and depth should really ever be pigeonholed as dance is another debate...).

Charles has sold over 100,000 albums without ever being considered 'mainstream' or having a major hit single...he has toured the world with a full (genuinely) live band...he has also dj'ed worldwide, playing regularly in every continent, without ever having had the need to be feted by the dance media as a flavour of the month...he's had the nous to have been running his own labels for years, frequently laying them to rest before they get tired and switching to other projects...he is comfortable making music at any tempo, straddles numerous genres (both real and imagined) with ease...bloody hell, he even writes songs.

See what we mean about mould-breaking ?

So what led to this blossoming talent? Well to truly understand that, let's go back....way back...back into time...

...where we find a shy young lad in rural Derbyshire, England, first fascinated by this album of his dad's called 'Help' by the Beatles...then enthralled by the madcap genius of prime era David Bowie...then seeing the electronic future thanks to Kraftwerk. And so our hero got his first instruments aged 15 (guitar, synthesizer and drum machine) and began treading the boards in early electronic bands a round Sheffield and Derby .

Then another fateful hand was dealt. Charles moved to Nottingham, started working in a restaurant... the owner of which also just happened to own the city's 'Garage Club', definitely the first House club in Nottingham (and arguably in England ). The owner invited all the staff to the opening party of his new club. One Graeme Park is the resident DJ, Larry Heard and DJ Pierre are on the turntables, and suddenly Charles is aware that the genre-defying music he has been creating himself has by chance happened across a genre and a scene which can take him to their very hearts.

From hereon it's a blurred tale of late nights in studios and clubs, collaborators aplenty, all pieces fitting together and helping to shape the king of electronic soul we know and love today. Earning his dance music spurs engineering for the great, the good, and just occasionally the godawful at the city's seminal Square Dance Studios, Charles comes of age as a producer in his own right with 1990's Sine and 1992's Megatonk projects.

Ever keen to push forward, 1993 sees CW grab the chance to move to San Francisco , where his production career goes into overdrive as the prime mover behind the acclaimed Love From San Francisco label. This in turn leads to tracks coming out on other acclaimed Stateside labels such as Emotive, Nitebeat, Happy Tracks, Rey-d et al. Charles also meets a 16 year old Terra Deva around this time, and with mom & grandma's permission, launches this prodigious talent into the dance music world via Furry Phreaks' 'Soothe' and 'Want Me Like Water'. Now one of the circuit's most in-demand singers, Terra still collaborates with Charles, most recently on 2002's 'Ready' (see below, 'Born on the 24 th July').

Back in the UK in 1996, Charles starts the Remote label, and begins to get serious props as a DJ. 'Getting Lifted' by Presence garners serious attention, leading to Pagan Records offering the Webster-masterminded project an album deal. The hugely successful 'All Systems Gone' release took the often staid world of so-called deep house into new stratospheres, won 'album of the month' plaudits in pretty much every publication that reviewed it worldwide (even scoring an unprecedented 11 out of 10 in one mag), and gave the world the classic single 'Sense of Danger', featuring Shara Nelson.

Shara and Terra are just two of many quality vocalists to have benefited from working with Charles. Other notable singers in Websterworld include Sara Jay and Steve Edwards, both of whom played a starring role in Presence's 1999-2000 live tour, feature on 'Born...', and continue to work with Charles on new Presence material, and for his latest label project Miso (picking up where his legendary Love From San Francisco and Remote imprints left off).

2002 saw worldwide acclaim and success for his first album under his own name, 'Born On The 24th July' (Peacefrog / Statra). Perhaps the closest thing yet to a full depiction of Charles's musical vision, it is a deep yet uplifting, soulful, diverse collection - and makes for a truly coherent album, rather than a patchwork of club tracks and fillers. New Presence demos are being recorded, and more releases are lined up for the much-feted Miso Records (including the return of the Furry Phreaks moniker), so you'll continue to hear a lot more from Matlock's finest export. Already in his music boarding school time, he eagerly explored the field of composition and became familiar with the most diverse music styles. He looked up to bands like Depeche Mode, Tears for Fears, Kraftwerk, Gary Numan,Thomas Dolby, Ultravox, Alan Parson..s, Vangelis and Jean Michelle Jarre. Soul artists like Bobby Womack, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, Stevie Wonder or Al Green are also among his Heroes until the present day. As other important sources of inspiration he includes Bands like Roxy Music (Bryan Ferry) and Marillion (Fish) who fascinate him with their slight tendency towards melancholy and calming seriousness.

As producer he creates albums which over the years are far from loosing their magic and appeal. Instead they should become an integral part of the CD selection and be rediscovered again and again. Jean F. Cochois refrains from merely stringing together song after song but always has an overall concept in mind. Intros, interludes, lyrics and artwork are as important to him as emotions and the avoidance or deliberate use of clich+eacute. His core idea is to communicate with his audience.

Not only as a producer, but also as a remixer, Jean F Cochois has earned great respect. Amongst his many remixes he has worked for artists such as the ex-Kraftwerk member Wolfgang Flür (Yamo), Mike Oldfield, Yello, Faithless and Boy George to name a few. As a highly sought after DJ, he travels the world and plays in places such as New York, London, Sweden, Denmark, Canada, Mexico, Spain, Greece, Turkey, Croatia, Hungary and Russia. As resident DJ he played in Sven Väths Cocoon Club and holds a residency in Budapest's legendary "I Love Deep" Parties.

Flatpack Traxx Presents Smoke City's Axiom & Newcomer Brandon Black, With a solid summery 4 track affair. Axiom has been delivering high quality tracks over the past 12 months with some very solid releases on some very notable labels such as Greenhouse, Smoke city, Black Crack, 1200 Traxx, Flatpack Traxx, Sampled & Greenskeepers Music under his hoodfellas guise. Brandon on the other hand has been involved in the EDM scene for over 10 years, built on a passion for classic house beats of the mid 90s & a sinister fetish for the jackin sound of today.

The Fried Chicken Renaissance Ep kicks off with "Kate Moss" a beautiful summery affair that keeps asses on the floor with a sick rolling bassline, disco tinged stabs & solid skippy drums, accompanied by some nice female vocals.

"Golden Girls" follows in a similar vein with Chunky skippy drums & a phat rolling bassline, adding to the summery vibe of this ep.

"Walking papers" is a total contrast to the rest of the ep. With instanly recognisable vocals, deep bassline & well programmed keys.

"Scenecreamer" rounds off the EP & is a solo offering from Brandon which builds & builds over deep percussive elements, skippy jackin beats, lush keys & a phat bassline with a famous 90's vocal.

It's a casual, relaxed atmosphere and there's even Chinese food right next door if you get hungry and a porno theatre next to that if you get horny.

Oh yeah, we'll be taking requests. The bar has high-speed internet access, so it'll be like one of those Touchtunes Jukeboxes that seem to be all the rage, but without the premium of having to spend all the quarters you wanted to use on Megatouch instead.

Todd Edwards is one of my all-time favorite producers, so to say that I'm excited that he's playing a 2 hour set in NYC is a huge understatement. Sadly, at least for me, that excitement won't be able to be released at the party, but I wanted to give you guys a heads up on one of the most prolific producers in house music history.

Todd Edwards - Biography

Though he gets less credit from stateside DJs and producers (at least compared to labelmates like Armand Van Helden), Todd Edwards created an innovative blend of rhythmic, cut-and-paste vocal samples, rubbery basslines, and slapping percussion that helped propel Britain's Sunday clubscene into the genuine cultural phenomenon of speed garage. Based in New Jersey, Edwards began producing for Nervous, the New York house label, during the early '90s. His 1993 "Guide My Soul" single, recorded as the Messenger, established a prototype for garage music that retained the soul and grit but avoided the overly polished airs much of the music had acquired. One year later, "The Praise" (as the Sample Choir) continued Edwards' irresistible, unique production style -- which often utilizes dozens of different samples, many of them himself -- and he also worked with two "real" vocalists, Kim English ("Tomorrow") and Veda Simpson ("Oohhh Baby").

In 1994, Edwards recorded several tracks for an upcoming New Jersey jazz-house label, i! Records. One year later, his second proper release on the label, "Saved My Life," became a big club hit and earned license in Britain through Pete Tong's ffrr Records. He provided remixes for several dance hits, by Robin S., Wildchild, Indo, St. Germain, the Beloved, and label-mate Kevin Yost. In 1999, Nervous collected his productions on a CD collection, and i! Records released Prima Edizione, a quasi-compilation including four new tracks. Craig has been dj'ing for over 10 years, playing many venues worldwide. In 2005 he decided to start giving something back to the scene after being heavily influenced by the US house sound, producing & remixing tracks for some notable labels including, Tango Recordings, Greenhouse, Yakuza & Control. Late 2006 saw the birth of Flatpack Traxx, a project started with Leon Knowles. Over the past year the label has grown & grown, with about 20 releases from a number of different artists.

Mes began his journey through the dance music industry when he was first exposed to house in 1993. While growing up in the San Francisco Bay area, his musical passion was fueled by soul, funk, and disco of the seventies, as well as eighties electro, hip-hop, and jazz. Drawing on the influences of friends Tony (Tango Records) and DJ Dan (Funky Techno Tribe) and Rob Drake (THC), Mes found a way to meld all of his early musical influences into a deep, yet driving and funky sound that allowed him to gain quick recognition in the house music scene. Early recognition of his talent and unique sound gave him the opportunity to play at the legendary Area 51 parties, as well as other now infamous events like The Gathering, Freedom, and The Burning Man Festival.
